The build-up to the event was every bit as exciting as Kaitlin remembered. Everyone was busy ordering new outfits from the sewing room, and there was an air of optimism around the community. Agnew was improving daily, and her mother looked in on her on a regular basis. She tired quickly, and contrary to Salin’s wishes, Agnew was back to reading her books. She wasn’t going to be fit enough for the event, but at least she had something to lift her spirits.

After seeing Berran’s physical condition, Kaitlin had been working on hers. She’d gone back to her jogging, but it wasn’t as comfortable as it used to be due to her enlarged breasts. It wouldn’t be long now. She was gradually replacing the breast-feeding with solid food, and so far, there’d been no complaints from her customers. She couldn’t wait to get back to normal. If only. She had no idea what that meant anymore. Was there ever going to be a life after Tannus? She prayed there would be.

On the evening of the event, Kaitlin did a twirl in front of her mother. “What do you think?”

Her mother raised her eyebrows. “Skimpy.”

“Mum, we’re in the twenty-first century.” Kaitlin tugged at her leather skirt. “Do you think it’s too short?”

Her mum laughed. “I think you look terrific. It’s a long time since I’ve seen you dressed to kill.”

“To kill? I’m dressing for me and always have. I’m not trying to impress anyone.” Liar, liar, pants on fire. Though she didn’t want to admit it, and would never voice it out loud, she wanted to see Berran’s expression when she saw this outfit.

“Come here.” Her mum took her in her arms and hugged her tightly. “You look lovely, darling.”

They turned around when they heard Kikka and Luna scream with joy as they bounced up and down on their mat.

Kaitlin’s mum chuckled. “Did you make those new outfits for them? They look like baby versions of you.”

“They’re good, aren’t they? I’m not quite sure if they like the pink leggings, but the T-shirts look a treat.” Kaitlin looked her mum up and down. “And you look great too. Skirt’s a bit low-key, but the blouse makes up for it.”

Kaitlin’s mum pushed her arm. “Come on. I need a drink.”

They scooped up the babies, carried them downstairs, and placed them in their pram. They wheeled them outside, and within seconds they were surrounded by dozens of gawking women who had all lost the power of normal adult speech. The usual cooing and incomprehensible baby talk took over. Kaitlin was congratulated until the words began to echo in her ears. When she saw Misha pushing through the crowd, she felt a sense of relief.

She looked up at the clear sky. They were blessed with dry, warm weather. It seemed that once a high pressure settled over Caysher, it lasted from May to September and then turned into an Indian summer. The manicured lawns were enhanced by all the women in their beautiful garments. There were no ball gowns, but they wouldn’t quite fit in here.
